What to Read on Friday: Surahs and Duas for Maximum Reward
Friday in Islam is a day unlike any other—a day of light, mercy, and abundant reward. Known as Yawm al-Jumu'ah, it is the weekly Eid for believers. While attending the Jumu'ah prayer is essential for men, there are also specific Surahs and Duas that the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous would recite to make the most of this blessed day.
Whether you're at the masjid, at work, or at home, here’s how to spiritually elevate your Friday and earn maximum reward.
Why Friday is So Special
Allah ﷻ chose Friday as the most honorable day of the week. In the Qur’an, He dedicates a chapter titled Surah Al-Jumu’ah, and the Prophet ﷺ emphasized:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday.”
(Muslim)
Acts of worship done on Friday are multiplied, Duas are more likely to be accepted, and spiritual tranquility fills the believer's heart.
Surahs to Recite on Friday
1. Surah Al-Kahf (Chapter 18)
The most recommended Surah for Friday:
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between this Friday and the next.”
(Hakim, Bayhaqi)
Why It's Special:
- Protects from the Dajjal (Antichrist)
- Fills your week with spiritual light
- Reflects four major trials of faith
When to Read:
Any time after Maghrib on Thursday night until Maghrib on Friday.
2. Surah Al-Jumu’ah (Chapter 62)
This Surah highlights the blessings of Friday itself.
It reminds believers of the importance of attending the congregational prayer and balancing worldly life with remembrance of Allah.
Best Time to Read:
On Friday morning before Jumu'ah or during personal Quran recitation.
3. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas
These three short Surahs, known as Al-Mu’awwidhat, are recommended to be recited regularly, especially on Fridays and before sleep.
Powerful Duas to Make on Friday
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is a moment on Friday when any Muslim who is praying and asks Allah for something will be granted it.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
This "hour" is believed by many scholars to be between Asr and Maghrib. Here are some key Duas to make:
1. Dua for Forgiveness
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ
“O Allah, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.”
(Surah Ibrahim: 41)
2. Dua for Mercy and Blessings
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Send frequent Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ—this is heavily rewarded on Friday.
“Whoever sends Salawat upon me ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening will receive my intercession on the Day of Judgment.”
(Tabarani)
3. Dua for Ease and Relief
اللَّهُمَّ لا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا
“O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy.”
Additional Recommended Actions on Friday
- Make abundant Dhikr: Say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu Akbar.
- Send Salawat all day:
“Increase your prayers upon me on the day and night of Friday.” (Abu Dawood)
-
Pray two extra units after Jumu'ah (or four if prayed at home):
The Prophet ﷺ recommended voluntary prayers after the congregational one.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to read Surah Al-Kahf
- Not making Dua between Asr and Maghrib
- Only sending Salawat once or twice instead of abundantly
- Treating Friday like an ordinary day without worship or reflection
